The first production Corvette with all-wheel drive (AWD) will be a hybrid able to sneak out of the neighborhood in near-silence on electric power before its big V8 ignites.
That’s about all anyone knows about the upcoming 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. Chevy revealed that much in a brief teaser video posted to Facebook today.
From the outside, the E-Ray will be identifiable thanks to a small badge on the vents behind the doors and the lack of the contrast-color body panels that make those vents stand out on other ‘Vettes.
From the inside, the video shows a brief glimpse of a regenerative braking button. A hand is shown paging through driving modes on the infotainment screen, selecting “stealth mode.”
Stealth mode appears to allow near-silent all-electric driving, at least for a short time. Persistent rumors out of Chevrolet have said the E-Ray is a hybrid but not a plug-in hybrid. So, we don’t expect all-electric driving for miles. But it’s apparently possible to at least get some distance from the neighbors’ houses before triggering the roar of the V8 that almost certainly powers the wheels.
The video shows the E-Ray keeping its balance on snow. An earlier teaser showed it tossing up plumes of snow from underneath all four wheels on start-up — something only an AWD car could do.
The full reveal is set for January 17 — just a week away.
