Chevrolet has ordered dealers to stop selling some high-performance Corvette models and issued a recall for 23,656 units from the 2023-2026 model years. In rare circumstances, the company says, the cars could burst into flame while refueling.
The recall applies only to the high-performance Corvette Z06, ZR1, and ZR1X. Stingray and hybrid E-Ray models are not included.
These models have a radiator and cooling fan on the left side mounted underneath the fuel filler pipe, Chevrolet says. If excess fuel spills when refilling, it could leak onto the radiator surface. “The cooling fan may draw the leaked fuel through the radiator, vaporize the fuel into the engine compartment, and expose the fuel vapor to an ignition source,” the company explains.
Chevrolet says it has identified four possible incidents. “Two included evidence indicating that the filling station pump was malfunctioning and caused a fuel spill at the time of the incident.”
Dealers will fix the problem by installing a shield to divert any spilled fuel away from the radiator.
