Cadillac used the occasion of a massive electronics show to launch a massive multi-display screen. The infotainment system in the upcoming Cadillac Lyriq electric vehicle (EV) will include a 33-inch-wide screen that displays everything both the driver and front passenger see.
The 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is going on as we speak, entirely virtual thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Increasingly, it’s a car show as automakers participate to unveil new features, and occasionally new models. This year, the emphasis seems to be on screens.
Cadillac’s effort doesn’t quite rival the massive, door-to-door Hyperscreen Mercedes-Benz unveiled yesterday, but it’s close. Thirty-three inches wide, the Lyriq’s screen centers in front of the driver. It also reaches past the middle of the car to take over for the infotainment display and center console controls.
Cadillac partnered with companies known for video game design and other digital experiences to develop the screen. The layout offers several color themes “to fit the driver’s mood and personality.”
The Lyriq, a luxury crossover EV planned for late 2022, is the centerpiece of Cadillac’s new direction. GM plans to make the division all-electric, going so far as to buy out dealerships who don’t want to focus on EVs.
While the Lyriq will be the first model to get the megascreen, a Cadillac press release this morning describing the screen refers to “Cadillac’s all-new vehicle displays.” So, we expect it to migrate across the rest of the brand’s cars if it’s well received by consumers.
