Cadillac CT4-V, CT5-V Blackwing Models Appear Early

Here are the Cadillac CT4-V and CT5-V Blackwing models, a little ahead of schedule. Cadillac had promised to unveil the pair of high-performance sedans tonight. But the company took the camouflage wrappings off the two cars early, running a commercial during TV coverage of the Rolex 24 at Daytona over the weekend.

Luxury carmakers often release a standard version of their sport sedans first. Then a performance-tuned edition with more engine power, tighter suspension and steering, and other tweaks intended to boost performance follows at a significantly higher price. The Blackwing models are Cadillac’s answer to the cars built by BMW’s M division and Mercedes-Benz AMG.

Understated Design

Visual changes are subtle. The pair roll on unique wheels not available on the standard  CT4 and CT5 and appear to sport wider rear tires. Larger air intakes, a front splitter, and a rear spoiler all appear, but none are big enough to call a lot of attention to themselves. Front fender vents alter airflow to cool the brakes a bit.

Cadillac claims the Blackwing models ride on the world’s fastest-reacting suspension. Cadillac’s magnetic ride control technology debuted last year. It uses accelerometers in the wheels to “read” road conditions, and alter the magnetic charge of the fluid within shock absorbers to increase or decrease damping.

We believe both sedans will come with a 10-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission and use rear-wheel drive. The CT4-V Blackwing will likely carry a turbocharged V6 engine, while the CT5-V Blackwing will have a more powerful V8. Cadillac plans to build just 250 of each. They may also be the last of their kind, as the brand is going all-electric.
