They say time flies when you’re having fun – or being successful. For BMW‘s X Model lineup, which is celebrating its 15-year anniversary, both of the aforementioned are true. The X legacy began in 1999 when the BMW X5 launched the automaker’s Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) designation and available all-wheel drive that added a new dimension to its overall capability. Since then, the lineup has expanded to include the X1, X3, X4 and X6 – the latter pair officially being designated as Sports Activity Coupes (SAC) — as well as the high-performance X5 M and X6 M variants for those who demand an X runner with even better-honed Ultimate Driving Machine credentials.

Global sales of BMW’s X models have now exceeded 3.3 million units and there’s still more to come. By the end of the decade, the lineup will expand by at least two models. A subcompact-scaled BMW X2 SAC that will share underpinnings with the new X1 is rumored while an new range-topping X7 SAV has been officially confirmed and is set to go on sale here in 2016, likely as a 2017 model. Like all other members of the X set, they’ll also roll off of the assembly line at BMW’s dedicated Competence Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
