BMW Recalls X3 Over Steering Wheel Movement When Still

BMW has recalled 36,922 X3 SUVs from model years 2025-2026 because their steering wheels can move unexpected while the car is stationary.

The company tells federal safety regulators that a torque sensor that helps detect whether the driver’s hands are on the wheel can cause the steering wheel to move. Thus far, the company has only seen the issue in stationary SUVs.

BMW is aware of no accidents or injuries related to the problem, but at least 21 field reports.

BMW will fix it with a software update. These vehicles can receive software patches over-the-air, so many owners won’t need to visit the dealership for a fix. But any owners who have disabled software updates may need to bring their cars in to have the update installed.

By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs. Manufacturers recall many cars, often more than once, during their lifespan. Automakers try to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all.
