BMW Recalls Vehicles Over Engine Starter Failure

BMW will recall 87,394 vehicles across various models and years due to a defect with the trailer tow module. Affected models are as follows:

The company told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that “Due to unexpected wear on an internal component, the engine starter may not function properly.”

This issue may prevent the engine from starting. Of note, the report indicates that, “In an extreme case, this could cause a fire when starting the engine, or while the engine is running.”

This recall is an expansion of the original one by BMW in October 2025.

BMW is not aware of any warranty claims, accidents, or injuries related to this recall.

BMW dealers will replace the engine starters with a different design. This service is free of charge, as recall repairs always are.

In accordance with BMW Group’s/Toyota’s reimbursement plan, any owners who previously had an engine starter issue and had it repaired at their expense before the recall may be eligible for reimbursement.

Owners with affected vehicles will be notified beginning March 24, 2026.

While automakers do their best to notify every vehicle owner affected by a recall, they may not reach everyone. Discover whether your vehicle has any outstanding recalls by checking the easy-to-use vehicle identification number (VIN) tool at our recall center.
