BMW Recalls EVs Over Power Loss

BMW has recalled 70,852 electric vehicles (EVs) because they can suddenly lose all drive power.

The company tells federal safety regulators that the cars’ software can “erroneously detect” a fault that doesn’t exist and shut down power as a safety measure. Drivers get some warning — an alert appears on the driver’s screen 15 to 20 seconds before shutdown.

The company knows of no accidents or injuries, but at least 43 warranty claims related to the problem.

Thankfully, it has an easy fix. BMW will send out an over-the-air software update that should fix the issue. Owners who have turned off over-the-air updates may need to bring their cars into the dealership to have the update installed.
