BMW recalled 112 diesel-powered 3 Series sedans and wagons from model year 2018 because certain engine parts can melt under normal conditions.
The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler can develop an internal leak in normal use. The leaking coolant can then mix with the normal soot produced in a diesel engine.
“In combination with high temperatures normally present in the EGR module, this might result in smoldering particles. In very rare cases, this could lead to the melting of the intake manifold, and in extremely rare cases, result in a possible fire,” the company says
Dealers will replace the EGR cooler and clean the pipe connecting it to the intake manifold to fix the problem. They will also inspect the intake manifold and replace it if it is damaged.
