BMW Recalls 2018-2023 X3 Over Cargo Rails

BMW X3: Trunk space

BMW has issued a recall for 291,112 X3 SUVs from model years 2018 through 2023 because tie-down rails in their cargo areas can detach in an “extreme rear crash.”

BMW tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the cargo rails can separate from the vehicle body, which could cause secured cargo or the rails to fly about the cabin in an accident.

The company says it is aware of one incident, but because that crash is the subject of a lawsuit, BMW can’t release much information about it. However, the company is conducting a safety recall out of “an abundance of caution.”

Dealers will replace the bolts that hold the rear cargo rails in place.

By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.

Many cars are recalled to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach all of them. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
