BMW Recalls 145,000 Over Fire Risk

BMW recalled 145,102 vehicles because their starter motors can overheat, creating a fire risk.

Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:

The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that some vehicles may have been built with faulty starters, requiring multiple attempts to start the engine. That can raise temperatures, which might ignite insulating material under the hood.

The company knows of no accidents or injuries, but several “thermal events” related to the issue.

Dealers will fix the problem by replacing the starter with a model of a different design.
