BMW, Mini Issue Recall Over Seat Belt Problem

BMW and its Mini subsidiary have recalled 1,024 cars because their rear seat belts might not protect passengers in an accident.

Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:

  • 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe
  • 2026 BMW X1
  • 2026 BMW X2
  • 2026 Mini Countryman

Modern seat belts use a retractor – a device that cinches them tight against the body in an accident. BMW tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that a supplier provided it with some damaged retractors, which may have been used in rear outboard seating positions. Those belts might spool out rather than locking in an accident.

The company is not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the issue, which the supplier discovered.

Dealers will replace both the left and right rear seat belts to fix the issue. Recall repairs are always free.
