While the 2018 Toyota Sienna is the oldest of the three minivans on this year’s Best Family Cars list — the current-gen model debuted for 2011 — a variety of enhancements for 2018 and an unassailable reputation for trouble-free ownership make it an attractive option. And there’s still something to be said for the long-term outlook of a product that’s had seven years’ worth of improvements and enhancements.

Value

Excellent resale value is very often a reflection of proven quality, and the Toyota Sienna is the reigning and five-time champion in the minivan division of our Best Resale Value Awards. The Toyota name has grown synonymous with dependable, reliable transportation, and the Sienna has been helping build and reinforce that reputation for many years.

If you end up selling your Toyota Sienna a few years down the road, there’s a good chance you’ll recoup a bigger share of your original purchase price than if you’d bought almost any other minivan. If, on the the other hand, you end up keeping your 2018 Toyota Sienna across several presidential campaigns, there’s an equally good chance your ownership experience will cost less and cause fewer headaches. The Sienna and Honda Odyssey are the traditional minivan leaders in these areas.

Features

For some buyers, the Sienna’s ace in the hole is its available all-wheel drive. As the only minivan to offer this added traction advantage, Toyota’s minivan is a particularly popular choice in those areas of the country subject to snow days.

But the 2018 Toyota Sienna is no one-trick pony. Fresh off last year’s powertrain revamp that brought a bump to 296 horsepower and a new 8-speed automatic transmission, the 2018 Toyota Sienna is further enhanced with a variety of cosmetic tweaks plus new safety and infotainment enhancements.

Every 2018 Toyota Sienna will come with the Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P) suite that includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Similarly, all Sienna models feature the automaker’s Entune 3.0 infotainment system with app-based navigation. Built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi is also on the menu, as are five USB ports and one of our favorite features, a 360-degree Bird’s-Eye View monitor that we find particularly valuable when backing out of parking spaces.

Other family-favorite features include Driver Easy Speak, which subtly amplifies the driver’s voice through the rear speakers, and available 2nd-row captain’s chairs that boast adjustable ottomans. All the comforts of home, indeed.
