The Volvo XC40 is an all-new vehicle, and it has wasted no time shaking up not just the Swedish automaker’s lineup, but also the burgeoning segment of subcompact luxury SUVs. First off, the XC40 looks like almost nothing else on the road, including its larger brothers the XC60 and XC90. In shape, style and attitude, the all-new 2019 XC40 goes its own way. Just look at its angular profile and youthfully energetic touches like two-tone roof/body combinations. How could you not choose such a cool combo?
Flexible, Tech-Forward Interior
Inside, the XC40 makes terrific use of space. Cubbies and hidden storage spots abound, and thoughtful features like a power tailgate and built-in rear cargo area divider make the XC40 an everyday helper.
The XC40 also wows in the tech space with a standard 9-inch vertical center display and fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster. Features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone compatibility are standard, of course, while music lovers have the option of a Harman Kardon premium audio system that sounds exceptionally good for the price.
Volvo Safety and Security
While the XC40 bucks some traditions, it’s a Volvo through and through when it comes to safety and security. In fact, the XC40 is a leader in its class for its standout active safety and driver assistance features. Unlike some rivals where you have to pay extra for driving aids like lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking, they are standard on every Volvo XC40.
Volvo’s smallest and least-expensive SUV can also be upgraded with the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system. In addition to being able to pace the vehicle in front with its adaptive cruise control, the system offers steering support, effectively keeping the vehicle within lanes and taking some of the stress off you, the driver. It’s a boon in both monotonous interstate cruising and aggravating stop-and-go traffic.
Two Trims, and a Subscription Service
The XC40 is offered in two forms and multiple trims. Starting just over $34,000, the lineup begins with the T4, which signifies front-wheel drive and a 187-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. For only $2,000 more, T5 models are all the more impressive. They come with all-wheel drive and an upgraded engine that makes 248 horsepower for brisk performance. Both engines are linked to smooth 8-speed automatic transmission, and R-Design models offer a sportier take with paddle shifters and a lowered chassis with firmer suspension.
In addition to traditional purchase or lease options, the XC40 is Volvo’s first vehicle in its subscription service. The all-inclusive plan has a shorter duration than a typical lease and includes everything from maintenance and 24/7 concierge service to full-coverage auto insurance. After 12 months, the subscriber has the option to switch to a new vehicle.
From its youthful flair to its sophisticated features and everyday practicality, the 2019 Volvo XC40 is breaking the mold. It’s helping usher in a newly energized Volvo brand, and leading the pack among subcompact luxury SUVs.
