Now in its fifth year, the Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards continue to evolve. This year, we’ve added some new categories to reflect the overall shift from traditional passenger cars to crossover SUVs. And to recognize that there just isn’t one Best Buy to fit everyone’s needs (after all, that’s why we have 14 categories), we’ve decided to award the Best New Model among this year’s crop of contenders. The award recognizes the one new or substantially redesigned model that offers value, technical innovation and a fresh approach not only to design, but also the ownership experience. The 2019 Volvo XC40, which is our Best Buy recommendation in the new Subcompact Luxury SUV category, fits the bill as our inaugural Best New Model pick.

Hot Segment Leader

Positioned in one of the hottest segments, the Volvo XC40, which starts at about $34,000, offers plenty of usable passenger and cargo space on a compact footprint. For that entry-level price, you get a front-drive T4 powered by a 187-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Step up to the T5 for just $2,000 more and you get 248 horsepower and all-wheel drive (AWD).

The XC40 does a great job of combining modern styling inside and out (we particularly like the two-tone paint scheme treatment) and cutting-edge technology on both the infotainment and safety front, the latter a traditional Volvo talking point. For example, it offers driver assists like lane keeping and blind spot monitoring standard, items that can be optional on base models. And while it competes with more expensive vehicles from luxury heavy hitters, it delivers an upscale feel, good driving dynamics and creature comforts that are a class above its asking price. All-in-all, the 2019 Volvo XC40 not only breaks ground in a growing category, it is one of those all-too-rare feel-good purchases.

Subscription Pioneer

While the XC40 hits all the boxes on the product front, there’s still more. Thanks to Care By Volvo, the XC40 is one of the first vehicles to offer an affordable subscription plan that is a harbinger of future vehicle use. The two-tier monthly pricing, $650 for AWD T5 Momentum models, $750 for AWD T5 R-Design versions, covers maintenance, concierge services, taxes and insurance, with a 15,000-mile-per-year allowance. Subscribers can sign up online and are referred to a local dealer to complete the transaction. While subscribers make a two-year commitment, they can swap into another vehicle after a year, as long as they commit for an additional two years. With the inclusion of insurance, the monthly payment offers a price-competitive alternative to a traditional lease or purchase.

Volvo, which is Latin for “I Roll,” is definitely on a roll with the introduction of the XC40. It shows that even an entry level vehicle in the luxury market can provide innovation and value accessible to a wide range of buyers.
