In a closely guarded semi-sneak peek, the Bentley Mulsanne Convertible Concept received its far-from-public preview during the Pebble Beach Concours weekend. The “black box” reveal of this stunning high-end exercise came in the form of a no-photos, private showing, open only invited guests and a few select journalists.
Save for admitting that the Mulsanne Convertible Concept “offers a glimpse into the potential future of the marque’s flagship family,” Bentley offered no other public details about the vehicle. However, Wolfgang Dürheimer, the firm’s Chairman and Chief Executive did add: “The modern, luxurious, high-tech Mulsanne saloon provides a perfect foundation on which to create the world’s most elegant convertible. The Convertible Concept will extend the appeal of the Mulsanne family, while enhancing the profile of the Bentley brand, particularly in new and emerging markets.”
With that kind of clear backing from the top, it’s only a matter of time before the meticulously finished and apparently fully engineered one-off that starred in this all-show/no-tell event makes it into the Mulsanne lineup. The next question is when it will turn up on the automaker’s display at a major international auto show.
On a less cloak-and-dagger note, Bentley also used the prestigious gathering at Pebble for the North American premiere showings of its fastest production model, the new 2013 Continental GT Speed, as well as its most radical take on the future, the Bentley EXP 9 F SUV Concept.
