Following up on this week’s announcement that it will expand its SUV family with a new entry-level Audi Q1 model in 2016, the automaker has released several teaser images of a new and equally edgy looking crossover-style concept vehicle it plans to present next month at the 2013 North American International Auto Show. Dubbed "the new Audi show car" for now, Audi execs say the exterior of this compact-scaled one-off reflects a "systematic development" of the firm’s design language that combines "a host of visual elements from future sports car models."

2014 Compact SUVs at a glance

Despite healthy ground clearance and front/rear aluminum skid plates that give this Allroad-inspired 2-door shooting brake plenty of multi-terrain capability – features that also would be welcome in the upcoming Audi Q1 — there’s equally well-founded speculation the show car concept more directly embodies a number of elements that also could turn up on the next generation Audi TT, which is due to launch next year. But wait, there’s more. In addition to its precisely rendered body surfaces, 19-inch wheel/tire fitment and a distinctive C-pillar treatment, the Audi show car concept also offers a more refined take on various cues associated with the firm’s e-tron models. That includes the look of the bars in its signature Singleframe grille as well as the bolder side-air intakes and the appearance of its dual headlamps, all of which reflect an extension of the thinking seen in the Audi Sport Quattro Concept that appeared at the Frankfurt show in September. All things considered, this rowdy little Audi should be one of the more intriguing debuts at the upcoming gathering in the Motor City.
