While decidedly circumspect about specific details, Lexus has confirmed that the all-new 2014 IS Series will have its public reveal at the Detroit Auto Show in January instead of the anticipated Geneva debut in March. For now, all the automaker will confirm is that the new-generation of its completely redesigned mid-size sport sedan that goes on sale later in 2013 was “Inspired by the acclaimed LF-CC concept” that was shown earlier this year in Paris and also incorporates design cues from the Lexus LFA supercar.
Beyond the absolute given that the new IS Series will feature a version of the division’s signature “spindle grille” design, we’ll have to wait a while to see exactly how the restyling/reengineering process plays out in production form. However, Lexus has admitted the car will be available here in IS250 and IS350 models and that the former will have its V6 paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission while the latter will back its bigger six with an 8-speed automatic derived from the paddle-shiftable unit used in the current high-performance IS F. Both variations on the IS theme will be available in both rear and all-wheel drive configurations.
Nothing so far on future plans for coupe, convertible or IS F iterations, but Lexus has confirmed that a hybrid version of the car, dubbed the IS 300h will not be heading to our shores. Powered by a Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive package that teams a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor, the IS 300h is seen as being a bit too close to the existing CT 200h to make it a viable addition to the U.S. Lexus lineup.
