Although official photos won’t be released for another day or so, VW has lifted the veil a bit and offered up these preview illos of a car it will present this week at Worthersee, the gathering of fans of the brand held annually in Reifnitz, Austria. Based on the Gen VII Volkswagen GTI, the Design Vision GTI is a one-off with a competition theme that wraps its dramatically recast lower, wider and shorter bodywork around a 503-horspower twin-turbocharged V6 engine backed by a DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. Power heads to all corners via a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system with sufficient might to carry the Design Vision GTI from 0-62 mph in just 3.9 seconds and top out at 186 mph.

To properly complement the Design Vision GTI track-tuned chassis, this high-intensity one-off rides on custom 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in staggered-width high-performance tires and features aero-optimized front/rear fascia treatments. With sport seats for two, this high-concept’s driver-centric cabin displays a similar kind of purposeful focus, keeping functionality at the forefront while maintaining an impressive level of comfort and civility that mixes carbon fiber with Alcantara and Nappa leather. Toss in a steering wheel with ergonomically contoured paddle shifters, Street/Sport/Track driving modes, a dash display that can show a diagram of the track being driven and an in-car camera mounted in the A-pillar, and you’ve got the makings of a most engaging and electrifying package. Stay tuned.
