All-New Subaru Outback Sees Price Bump for 2026 — Here’s Why

  • The all-new Subaru Outback will start at $36,445, an increase of over $5,000
  • Much of the increase comes because Subaru has eliminated the base model

The Subaru Outback received one of the most dramatic makeovers of any car for 2026. It lost the lifted-wagon look that has long been its trademark, becoming a more conventional-looking blocky SUV. Its interior is also all-new, with a high-mounted touchscreen instead of the signature low-mounted, portrait-oriented screen Subaru drivers are used to.

Under the skin, it still has Subaru genes – symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD), low-mounted boxer engine, and all. But inside and out, it’s a new look for the company.

The new design comes with a radical new pricing structure. At first glance, the 2026 Outback starts at a shocking $5,030 higher than the 2025 model.

That’s partly an illusion. Subaru has eliminated a slow-selling base model. Since most buyers choose the Premium, Limited, or Touring models, eliminating the base model won’t really impact what they pay.

But prices are up across the board. That’s something we expect to see more of this fall.

Automakers largely held off on big price increases when the U.S. enacted hefty new car tariffs. The average new car buyer in July paid just 1.5% more than a year ago, even though brands like Subaru have been paying 25% tariffs to import many cars since April. (The Subaru Outback is made in America at the automaker’s factory in Indiana.)

But the U.S. recently signed long-term trade deals with much of the world, fixing tariffs at a historically high 15% rate. Automakers have begun telling us that, now that they know their costs will remain higher indefinitely, they will have to begin raising prices to avoid losses.

Subaru has also raised its destination fees. In 2025, buyers paid $1,420 for transport costs; in 2026, they’ll pay $1,450. The 2026 Subaru Outback is slated to go on sale in late 2025.
