Six weeks ago, when we were all 10 years younger, Toyota began dripping out details about an all-new 2024 Tacoma midsize truck.
At first, they had genuinely interesting details to reveal. A hybrid powertrain was coming. A dedicated overlander, the Tacoma Trailhunter, would join the lineup.
Over time, though, they ran out of things to say. A teaser photo showed a removable Bluetooth speaker. Another tried to make news out of the rear brakes.
In a final bid for attention, Toyota revealed something interesting to enthusiasts – a manual transmission for the pickup.
Thankfully, Toyota has shown mercy on the marketing team who had to write press releases about these things, and the Tacoma faithful growing tired of reading them. The automaker revealed today that the 2024 Tacoma will finally make its appearance on May 19. The wait is (almost) over.
Along with the news, Toyota sent silhouettes showing four different bed and cab configurations.
That alone is news. Two of the Tacoma’s major competitors – the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon – now come only in crew cab, short box configuration. It’s hard to tell from Toyota’s images whether the Tacoma will be offered in a single-cab configuration, but extended-cab and crew-cab models seem likely.
What is likely the Trailhunter configuration appears with a roof rack and sport bar.
That’s all anyone knows for two more weeks. We’ll bring more details when we have them.
