Acura Teases ‘Segment Defying’ Mystery EV

Acura will use next week’s Monterey Car Week event to debut a new…well, we thought we’d know how to finish that sentence.

We don’t have enough to go on.

Honda’s luxury division says this much and little more: “Acura will once again take center stage during Monterey Car Week for the world debut of an exciting new concept vehicle.” The short press release goes on to describe the car as a “segment defying sport utility vehicle.”

It may be headed for production. Acura says it “signals” a future model. Acura concept cars tend to hew closely to future production cars.

We do know the new car is electric – Acura promises it will “be built in Ohio on the company’s new dedicated EV [electric vehicle] platform.” That sentence sounds unremarkable but hides real news. Until now, Acura’s halting EV efforts have used General Motors platforms.

The 2024 Acura ZDX – its only EV so far – shares most of its parts with the Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Blazer EV, and other electric cars built on GM’s Ultium platform. But Honda has promised to go its own way with a built-from-scratch EV architecture soon. This may be your first public glimpse of it.

It’s not much of a gimpse, yet. An attached photo looks to us like a sedan or sport coupe from the rear. So “segment-defying” may mean a low-slung, coupe-like SUV. Ironically, that’s what the original ZDX was. But Acura already used that name on a more conventional electric SUV.

We expect to bring more news soon, as events in Monterey kick off this weekend.
