About Polestar

Polestar got its start as an in-house tuner shop at Volvo, producing high-performance versions of the Swedish automaker’s cars. It has since spun off into a separate company, though it maintains close ties to Volvo.

The only product the company sells today is the Polestar 2, a rugged-looking all-electric fastback sedan with up to 270 miles of range and a starting price of $48,400 (plus a $1,400 destination fee). Its Polestar 1 hybrid performance coupe has sold out and ended its production run.

About the Polestar 3

Polestar says its third production vehicle will be “a powerful, design-led electric performance SUV that appeals to the senses with a distinct shape and excellent driving dynamics.” The company says the 3 sits on a platform co-developed with Volvo, and rumors suggest it may be the same architecture beneath Volvo’s upcoming EX90 flagship SUV.

At launch, Polestar says, it will use a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive electric platform biased toward the rear for performance. The Polestar 3 will use torque vectoring for enhanced handling. It will include an adaptive dual-chamber air suspension and active dampers as standard. That, the company says, “allows Polestar 3 to switch between comfort and firm suspension dynamics.”

The company hasn’t revealed power figures for the 3. Polestar says that an optional Performance Package will upgrade power to 910 newton-meters, a measurement that probably equates to around 510 horsepower (we can’t do the math with the information they provided).

The company will build the car in Volvo’s South Carolina factory. But we anticipate that prices will be too high to qualify for the federal government’s new made-in-the-USA electric car tax incentives. We’ll know more on Oct. 12.
