Mazda is marketing its next flagship SUV as a more upscale vehicle than the current top of the Mazda line. But they aren’t pricing it very differently.
Today, the most expensive vehicle in the Mazda lineup is the 2023 Mazda CX-9. A 3-row family SUV known for its fun-to-drive nature (for such a big vehicle), it starts at $38,750, plus $1,275 to deliver. Fully equipped, CX-9 prices can push into the low $50,000 range.
Soon, Mazda will bring the 2024 CX-90 to showrooms. The two will be sold side-by-side at first, though the 90 will eventually replace the 9.
It looks more sophisticated, with a selection of deeper colors and luxury car tailoring details like chrome badges identifying the powertrain inside. It’s more upscale inside, too, with a selection of materials ranging from leatherette to luxurious Nappa leather and details like Kumihimo-style stitching, a technique borrowed from traditional hand bookbinding techniques.
But its price isn’t much higher. The 2024 CX-90 will start at $39,595, plus $1,375 for delivery.
Prices do stretch higher, with Mazda asking $59,950 for the top of the CX-90 lineup, the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus.
Three Powertrains
Buyers can choose from three powertrains for the 2024 CX-90. Base models get a turbocharged 3.3-liter 6-cylinder engine making 280 horsepower.
A performance-tuned plug-in hybrid option uses a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor for 323 horsepower. Mazda hasn’t said how far it will travel on electric power before its gasoline engine kicks in.
A second 3.3-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine making 340 horsepower drives higher-end models. Mazda calls this one the 3.3-liter Turbo S to distinguish it from the other 3.3-liter Turbo.
All three send power through a new 8-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels, with a bias toward the rear for better handling in fair weather. Kinematic Posture Control, which brakes the inner wheels in a turn, should help the big SUV keep its composure in more spirited driving.
2024 Mazda CX-90 Pricing
Mazda also charges a mandatory $1,375 shipping and handling fee ($1,420 in Alaska).
