Jaguar Land Rover, now known as JLR, wants to expand some of its best-known models into brands. Last week the company announced plans to remake itself as a “house of brands,” with storied names like Range Rover and Defender perhaps even getting standalone showrooms.
Perhaps that’s why the Defender lineup keeps expanding. For years, the brand has sold the short-wheelbase, 2-row Defender 90 and the longer, 3-row Defender 110. Last year, they stretched it further, adding the extra-long Defender 130, with enough space to seat adults in the third row and lots of cargo room.
Our expert reviewers found it roomy and capable off-road, with a few sub-par interior materials and less-than-stellar fuel economy.
For 2024, Land Rover will make a few changes to the stretched 130. They won’t address those complaints.
Modified Engine Lineup
The 2023 model offers a choice of three engines. The 2024 model will also have three, but they’re a different set.
The base Defender S gets the P300 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine making 296 horsepower. A P400 inline 6-cylinder making 395 is an option, or standard on the X-Dynamic SE, X, and Outbound models (more on that one in a moment). A new P500 5.0-liter supercharged V8 sits at the top of the lineup, making 493 horsepower. It’s found only in the high-end Defender V8.
That engine is a bit less powerful than the supercharged V8 offered last year, which made 518 horsepower. JLR hasn’t published mpg figures on the 2024 models, so we’re not sure why they detuned the V8. But mileage is the likely answer.
A 3-Row Model Without the Third Row
The other change seems odd. A new model called the 130 Outbound joins the lineup, and it’s unique. It deletes that spacious third row that seemed to be the reason JLR built the 130 in the first place.
Who would need an extremely stretched 5-seater? Overlanders, that’s who. The cavernous space behind the second row (almost 47 cubic feet even with the rear seats in use) would allow lots of room for tents, sleeping bags, water, and whatever else you need for a long-term vehicular trek.
To make the point even more clear, JLR gave it a rubber floor with tie-down points and a cargo net. The rubber floor folds out to cover the bumper when loading bulky, scratchy things.
The Outbound comes only with the P400 inline 6-cylinder engine, good for 395 horsepower thanks to both turbocharging and supercharging. It comes with all-terrain tires and gets matte-finished bumpers because you’re going to scratch them out there.
