The Hyundai Kona is a stealth great car. It doesn’t seem to have the public profile of the Toyota RAV4 or Honda HR-V. But, after a recent redesign, it’s the single highest-scoring 2-row SUV we’ve tested. It just won our 2024 Best Buy Award in the subcompact SUV class.
The Kona is one of the very few vehicles available as a gas-powered car and an electric vehicle (EV). Hyundai dealers already have the internal combustion version in stock. At the moment, they’re still offering the 2023 Kona Electric — the model from before the recent redesign. But a 2024 Kona Electric is on its way to dealerships. We expect dealers to start selling it any day now.
Larger, Improved Interior, But Lower Price
The 2024 model is larger, with added passenger and cargo space and a drastically improved look with an easily identifiable signature — a full-width light bar Hyundai designers call the seamless horizon lamp.
The interior is updated with a driver’s instrument screen and a central touchscreen housed in one bezel, making it look like a single wide screen. The rear seats recline — a rare touch we appreciate in a subcompact vehicle.
Hyundai has now taken the final step before sales begin, releasing pricing. Surprisingly, the 2024 Kona EV is slightly less expensive than the 2023 model it replaces, despite a roomier interior, updated cabin tech, and a choice of two powertrains. The new model starts at $32,675. The lowest price available on a 2023 Kona Electric is $33,550.
That price also makes the electric version an option for some shoppers looking at gas-powered Konas. The internal combustion version of the vehicle tops out at $31,650.
The lower price gets you just 133 horsepower and a battery with 197 miles of range — plenty for urbanites but not what some of us want for regular highway drives. Stepping up to a 201-hp model with 261 miles of range requires buying the midlevel SEL trim or the top-of-the-line Limited.
2024 Kona Electric Pricing:
Hyundai also charges a mandatory $1,335 destination fee on all Kona Electric SUVS.
