- GMC hasn’t announced pricing for the 2024 Sierra HD. We expect a modest increase from the current starting point of $42,995, plus a $1,795 freight charge.
- Two new trims appear for 2024 — an off-road-focused AT4X and a super-luxury Denali Ultimate model.
- New towing tech includes an available “see through” trailer camera view and adaptive cruise control that accounts for a trailer’s weight.
For the 2024 model year, GMC’s Sierra HD heavy-duty pickup gets a new look inside and out, a more powerful diesel engine option, and new towing technology. It’s not a new truck from the ground up. But it is a more extensive redesign than automakers usually make between model years.
Most automakers sell their full-size trucks under one name. General Motors divides its lineup in two, selling largely the same vehicle as the Chevrolet Silverado HD and the GMC Sierra HD. The GMC is marketed as the more luxurious option, but you can buy a Silverado equipped with most of the same luxuries.
Chevy debuted a new Silverado HD less than two weeks ago. The fancier GMC edition has now appeared with many of the same upgrades.
Diesel With Nearly 1,000 lb-ft of Torque
The big functional news is a more powerful diesel engine. Heavy-duty trucks often serve as towing vehicles, where the hefty pulling power and better highway mileage of diesel engines are at their best. The 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel available in the new Sierra HD now makes 470 horsepower and a truly impressive 975 lb-ft of torque.
A gas-powered 6.6-liter V8 is also on offer, unchanged, with 401 horsepower. Both engines work through a new 10-speed automatic transmission — four more gears than last year’s model. GMC says the new gearbox “translates into a more confident feeling of on-demand power.”
See-Through Trailer View and More Towing Tech
Towing is the focus of many of the tech upgrades for 2024 as well. They include an optional “Industry First Transparent Trailer View” that uses cameras mounted on the rear of the truck and an accessory camera owners can mount on the rear of the trailer, piecing together “a view of the area behind the truck and trailer as if the trailer was not there.”
Another option extends the blind zone alert to account for a trailer’s lengths. An available adaptive cruise control accounts for a trailer’s drag and increased stopping distance.
An onboard scale system warns you if the trailer and vehicle together have exceeded safe weight parameters.
Unique Looks by Trim Level
Exterior changes are modest. Each trim level gets its own unique grille pattern. As you approach the truck with the key, a new animated lighting sequence plays. New wheel designs are exclusive to each trim level.
Inside, GMC says, the truck gets “new color and stitching designs throughout, with more premium materials throughout the cabin, further elevating the Sierra’s premium look and feel.” The centerpiece of the updates is an available 13.4-inch tablet-style touchscreen. It’s big enough to run in a split-screen format showing two functions at once.
Denali Ultimate Super-Luxe Trim, Off-Road Version Coming
There are two new trims for the Sierra HD. The first is a new Denali Ultimate which offers even more luxury than the famous Denali trims. It carries the new diesel as standard equipment. Outside, it wears a unique dark Vader chrome grille, 20-inch wheels with high gloss black accents, and “unique fender badging featuring topography of Mount Denali.”
Inside, an Alpine Umber interior uses full-grain leather, open-pore Paldao wood trim, and etched stainless steel speaker grilles. An exclusive 12-speaker Bose Premium audio system uses Centerpoint surround technology.
Later in 2023, an off-road-oriented AT4X trim will be introduced.
