2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid: More Power, Less Efficient, and a Lower Price

The 2023 Toyota Corolla hybrid seen from a front quarter angleThe 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is more powerful but less fuel efficient than the 2022 Corolla Hybrid.

There are few cars with a pedigree like that of the Corolla. After more than 50 years and 50 million sales, it’s one of the most well-known and predictable cars in history. A more fuel-efficient version makes sense, but our testers have found piloting it an “easy and safe yet ultimately uninspiring driving experience.”

Car shoppers understand that there’s a trade-off between horsepower and fuel economy. Toyota engineers are betting that they got it wrong. They’ve added 13 more horsepower to the Corolla’s gas-and-electric model for 2023.

But last year’s Corolla Hybrid managed 52 mpg in combined driving. This year, it will get 47.

That may not be the biggest news for Corolla Hybrid shoppers, though. Toyota has also added an all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid to the mix. It gets 44 mpg in combined driving, but plenty of buyers in northern climates may decide that a 3-mpg cutback for the added confidence of AWD in icy weather is a fair trade.

Even that, however, may not be the biggest news. Toyota has dropped prices even in a year when inflation dominates the news. The 2022 Corolla Hybrid started at $24,050. The 2023 model starts at $1,250 less.

Toyota also charges a mandatory $1,095 destination fee on all Corolla Hybrid models.
