The Toyota Corolla has been the right amount of car at the right price for millions of Americans for half a century. But Americans buy few cars these days. They prefer SUVs. A Corolla SUV, then, might be perfect.
So Toyota built one – the 2023 Corolla Cross.
But hold on. Gas prices have been volatile in recent years. Climate change news is everywhere. Is there a way to have the cake of SUV practicality and eat it, too, burning less gasoline? What about a Corolla SUV hybrid?
Sure. Here you go.
The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid sounds like something a mad scientist cooked up. It could answer the needs of as many people as possible and keep its price reasonable.
As in below $30,000. The 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid will start at $27,970. Toyota will undoubtedly attach a delivery fee to that price, but they haven’t disclosed the cost. Assuming it’s $1,335, like the gas-powered Corolla Cross, that keeps prices below the $30k line.
At a time when the average new car costs over $48,500, that’s a bargain.
For that bargain price, you get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that, combined with its hybrid system, puts out 196 horsepower. That’s 27 more than the less-efficient, gas-powered model. It’s good for 42 mpg in combined driving.
Every Corolla Cross Hybrid is all-wheel drive (AWD).
Toyota will offer the model in three trim levels – S, SE, and XSE. All three get both major phone projection systems, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as standard equipment, and both accept wireless connections. Almost all of Toyota’s advanced safety equipment is standard on all three as well, including a pedestrian-detecting automatic emergency braking system and lane departure alert with steering assist. But Toyota only builds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert into Se and XSE models.
2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Pricing:
Toyota will also add a destination fee to the price of every Corolla Cross Hybrid. The company’s pricing announcement didn’t specify how much it will add, but the usual answer for smaller Toyota SUVs is $1,335 this year.
