The Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is one of the best cars no one knows about. It takes up little space as a compact SUV. But it offers seating for up to seven. It looks surprisingly sophisticated since a recent redesign. And, we now know, it provides one of the longest all-electric ranges of any plug-in hybrid.
Electric Car Virtues, Gasoline Flexibility
Plug-in hybrids, in case you haven’t kept up to date on new car technology, are a step between gas-powered and electric cars. They can travel a certain distance on electric power alone before their gasoline engines start. That gives them as much range as any gas-powered car with no worries about unpredictable public charging stations. Plug-in hybrids still let their owners pay for cheaper electricity rather than more expensive gas for most of their driving.
The 2023 Outlander PHEV is rated for 38 miles of range on electric power before the gas engine starts. Among compact SUV plug-in hybrids, only the Toyota RAV4 Prime exceeds that.
It’s also one of the only PHEVs capable of charging at DC fast chargers. That could let owners top up quickly while out and about. It takes 38 minutes to get to 80% – slower than most electric cars. But that still allows you to add mileage for the trip home while you do your grocery shopping.
Mitsubishi kept the range and other details under wraps for a long time. They revealed photos of the Outlander PHEV nearly a year ago. But the Japanese company gave the tech details just this week.
They include a new power figure – the Outlander PHEV’s 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors combine to make 248 horsepower. Every Outlander PHEV is all-wheel drive.
