All-new for 2023, the GLC gets an evolutionary update on the outside. Many automakers are toning down the chrome this year, but Mercedes has nudged its shininess dial up a notch. The grille wears a new horizontal crossbar with the big 3-pointed star in the center. A big chrome surround highlights the air intakes under the grille.
But the interior is the standout argument for buying one. The 2023 GLC is lovely inside, with a sleek, modern balance of smooth surfaces and soft leather. Several interior color options lean into a high-tech theme, with brightwork and muted metal-look surfaces where older generations of Mercedes would have emphasized woods. A new, freestanding 12.3-inch driver’s instrument panel and portrait-oriented 11.9-inch central touchscreen multimedia display stand out from the dashboard.
Under the hood is a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine combined with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. It’s good for 255 horsepower. Like in the C-Class sedan (with which it shares a chassis), the GLC can temporarily boost that power. An integrated starter generator — a technology borrowed from Mercedes’ racing division — gives drivers a surge of 23 additional horsepower for a few seconds. Power goes through a 9-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels in the GLC 300 or all four in the GLC 300 4Matic.
