2023 Mazda CX-30 Gets More Power, Safety Gear

The Mazda CX-30 is getting some upgrades for the 2023 model year. This time, they’re not cosmetic. The boost comes where it counts — beneath the hood.

The base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine gains an extra 5 horsepower, for a total of 191. The added power is a pleasant surprise since the CX-30 is already regarded as the subcompact SUV choice for those who love to drive.

The engine gains fuel efficiency with its power bump thanks to improved cylinder deactivation technology. It’s now EPA-certified for 26 mpg in the city, 33 on the highway, and 29 in combined driving. The 2022 model, for comparison, rated 24 mpg in the city, 31 on the highway, and 26 mpg combined.

Other enhancements include new rear side airbags, new seatbelt pretensioners, and a shin pad added to the front and rear door trims.

The more powerful 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is not changing for the new model year. But you’ll have to pay more to get it — Mazda trimmed the Turbo trim level from the lineup. That leaves the Turbo Premium as the cost of entry for the 250-horsepower engine, at $33,800.
