Has any car ever come as far as the Kia Sportage? It’s the automotive world’s equivalent of the dorky little kid who took a few years to grow into his TV-star good looks and put on some muscle.
When it first appeared in the US, it was an underpowered, bulbous-looking economy vehicle with an odd convertible option. First-generation Sportage models – we’re not kidding — were once recalled because the rear axle and wheels could fall off while driving.
And now? Look at it.
One of the First 2023 Models Unveiled
Kia has offered a preview of the 2023 Sportage. The compact SUV has grown into a sophisticated-looking vehicle with some high-tech touches normally seen only on more expensive cars.
The 2023 Sportage won’t reach dealerships until next year, and Kia hasn’t revealed pricing yet. The company says only, “more information on the all-new Sportage will be made available in due course.” The 2022 edition starts at $24,090, plus a $1,175 destination charge. We expect to see some price increase to go with the glow-up.
New, Handsome Exterior
Outside, the 2023 Sportage looks far more upscale than the version it’s replacing. It may even manage to stand out in a crowded compact SUV market with its sleek lines. The profile view is still a bit generic, but from the front, it’s handsome.
Boomerang-like daytime running lights give it a contemporary edge. Kia has even divided the air vents above the grille, like nostrils, for the benefit of people who can’t resist anthropomorphizing their cars.
New Tech for Interior
Inside, the Sportage goes upscale. The driver’s instruments are replaced with a screen display. The central touchscreen is curved – a detail we’re used to seeing only on luxury cars. The screen controls climate functions, but there’s also a knob to allow drivers to adjust the temperature easily.
Kia has been embracing a wider color palette than most rivals with its recent interiors. The Sportage will be available with sage green upholstery, in addition to the usual selection of grays and taupes.
Kia hasn’t given details on what’s under the hood. The Sportage shares a platform with the Hyundai Tucson. Hyundai sells both a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid version of that car. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Kia follow suit.
