At first glance, the prices of both the Kia Sorento Hybrid and its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) twin have increased by thousands of dollars for 2023. But the price spike comes because Kia has eliminated base trims that few buyers chose.
Compared to comparable trims, the increases are much more modest.
Two Hybrid Options
The Sorento is the quiet kid in the midsize SUV segment, but it knows the material and is a joy to have in class. It offers seating for seven but is smaller and more affordable than the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, or its big brother Telluride.
It comes in two hybrid forms, both of which have seating for six. The Sorento Hybrid pairs a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor for 227 total horsepower and fuel economy of 39 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway in front-wheel-drive (FWD) form. All-wheel-drive (AWD) versions get 36/33.
For 2023, the Sorento Hybrid loses its entry-level S trim. The better-equipped EX is now the base. It adds one feature that would improve the ownership experience (a power-adjustable passenger’s seat) and one that makes no difference (a frameless rearview mirror). It starts a $36,590 – about $2,500 more than last year’s S but only about $700 more than last year’s EX.
The Sorento PHEV is more powerful, with 261 total system horsepower, and comes only in AWD form. It can travel up to 32 miles on electric power alone before the gasoline engine starts.
It also loses an inexpensive trim that wasn’t selling well. The SX trim is gone, leaving only the SX Prestige. It adds a few niceties, including standard rear sun shades and the HomeLink system, which can be programmed to operate your garage door and smart home lighting systems.
Because the SX model is gone, the Sorento PHEV carries a starting price nearly $5,000 higher than last year. But, compared to last year’s SX Prestige trim, the increase is about $1,800.

Kia also charges $1,295 to deliver the Sorento hybrid. That’s $40 more than the 2022 delivery price.
