The Genesis G90 may be the best car nobody knows about. It competes with super-luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8. It offers a shocking amount of features for a lower price than its rivals. The best most full-size sedans can do is look brutish, but its new 2023 model is flat-out gorgeous.
About the only complaints our test driver could manage after spending time with one was that it lacks a hybrid model and the neighbors might not be as impressed by a Genesis as they would be by a Mercedes.
We can now scratch out one of those. A hybrid is on the way.
The 2023 G90 will be available with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 mated to a 48-volt hybrid system with an electric supercharger to add power and fuel efficiency. The model features all-wheel drive and uses an 8-speed automatic transmission. We don’t know the pricing yet. The current G90 starts at $74,950, plus a $1,095 freight charge to bring it here from South Korea).
Documents Genesis filed with the U.S. EPA say the new engine is good for 420 horsepower – a good jump from the 365 found in the current G90’s 3.3-liter V6 and a match for the V8 Genesis used to make available. It’s rated for 17 mpg in the city, 24 on the highway, and 20 combined. Those aren’t great numbers for a hybrid, but they match what the smaller V6 in the current 2022 model can do. So there will be no fuel economy penalty for springing for the added power.
The standard 2023 G90 will also get an upgraded engine, a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, that earns an EPA-estimated rating of 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway. In the smaller G80 luxury sedan, that engine makes 375 horsepower.
