The funky little Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric vehicle (EV) is the 2022 World Car of the Year.
It also took home the awards for World Electric Vehicle of the Year and World Car Design of the Year.
The Ioniq 5, if you haven’t seen one in traffic yet, is an all-new electric vehicle that straddles the line between hatchback and SUV. It’s a distinctive design, combining a curved greenhouse with sharply angled character lines. A pixelated theme to the lights makes it look like a modern interpretation of an 8-bit 1980s design aesthetic.
It offers a range of up to 303 miles on a charge and makes excellent use of space, packing as much passenger and cargo volume as a midsize SUV into the footprint of a compact one. It starts at $43,650 but is eligible for the full $7,500 federal EV tax credit.
The World Car Awards are the work of a jury of more than 100 automotive journalists from 34 countries. The jury grants six awards. Hyundai’s newest EV took home half of them. In a sign of where the auto industry is headed, EVs won all but one of the awards. The Toyota Yaris Cross, which took home the award for city cars, is not sold in the U.S. It was the only non-EV to win anything.
