2022 Toyota Supra Finally Gets a Manual Transmission

2022 Toyota Supra Special EditionThe classic 2-door, 2-seat, rear-wheel-drive sports car is supposedly an endangered species. So why is 2022 shaping up to be such a great year for sports car enthusiasts?

Those who buy (or dream of) quick little 2-seaters got great news this week, as Toyota confirmed to multiple press outlets that its 2022 GR Supra apex predator will finally get a manual gearbox. It won’t happen right away. But will reportedly reach dealerships before the 2022 model year is out.

Toyota has been able to build a 6-speed Supra since it first launched the latest edition of its top-of-the-line sports car in 2020. But the company declined to market it, arguing that the 8-speed automatic every current GR Supra carries was quicker. Those who insist on driving stick, Toyota said, could still buy 2022 GR 86 to suit their desires.

But the heart wants what it wants. Loyalists have demanded a third pedal, and Toyota will reportedly give in to their demands this year.

Alongside the rebirth of the Nissan Z and Toyota’s repeated sneaky hints that a GR Corolla hot hatch is coming, 2022 is looking more and more like a great year for the supposedly doomed sports car.
