2022 Hyundai Tucson to Offer Plug-in Hybrid, N Line Models

Hyundai will add both a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and a sportier-looking N Line model to its 2022 Tucson lineup. Neither development is a surprise. Tucson is all-new for 2022, and we’ve long expected both models to appear in the lineup. Now we have details on each for the first time.

First to appear will be the Tucson N Line. Unlike models from Hyundai’s high-performance N sub-brand, N Line models are cosmetically different from the cars on which they are based but offer no major performance enhancements. The Tucson N Line will start at $31,785 (plus a $1,185 destination fee) – a premium of about $4,000 over the standard model.

The Tucson N Line features a blackened grille, unique front, and rear bumpers, spoiler, and N Line badges. Black headlight bezels, 19-inch black alloy wheels, and dual tailpipes lend it a more aggressive look than the standard Tucson. The N Line will be offered in Ash Black, White Pearl, Titan Gray, or Red Crimson paint.

Inside, the N Line gets black leather sport seats with cloth inserts and red stitching, a black headliner, metal pedals and door sill plates, and a Bose audio system.

The plug-in hybrid Tucson will reach dealerships this summer. Pricing is yet to come, though Hyundai offers a standard hybrid Tucson that starts at $30,235. The addition of plug-in technology typically adds about $5,000 to the price of a car. If that’s the case it would still keep the Tucson nearly $4,000 cheaper than the similar Toyota RAV4 Prime.

The Tucson PHEV will use the same turbocharged, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine as the hybrid Tucson. The difference is a larger plug-in battery pack good for 13.8 kWh of power. That bumps total horsepower up to 261 (from the standard hybrid’s 227) and gives it an all-electric range of 32 miles. Hyundai says that when it uses the gasoline engine, the Tucson PHEV should earn an EPA combined mileage rating of 70 mpg.

The Tucson PHEV will charge in less than 2 hours from a level 2 charger, Hyundai says.
