Most trim levels of the Ford Escape will get about $400 more expensive for the 2022 model year. Some will get slightly less expensive. And buyers will have to shell out money for a stereo that used to be standard equipment.
The Escape was redesigned for the 2020 model year and has changed little since. It’s known for a particularly spacious cabin in a compact SUV footprint and comfortable seats. But an anemic base engine keeps it from the top of its class. It currently sits 10th out of 12 in our list of the Best Compact SUVs, though it could still be the right choice for those looking who want a comfortable commuter.
Ford introduced a plug-in hybrid version last year, which is capable of driving on electric power for up to 37 miles before its gasoline engine kicks in.
Few Changes for the New Year
For 2022, the Escape stays largely the same. The mid-level SEL trim loses its standard roof rails (you can still get them, but they’re an added-cost option now).
Last year, the top-end Titanium trim shipped with a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system. This year, it will be available only as part of the Titanium Elite package.
We expect the Escape to get a more substantial update, though not a thorough redesign, for the 2023 model year. Buyers willing to spend a little more might also consider another compact SUV from the brand. The Ford Bronco Sport is built on the same platform as the Escape but adds a dose of attitude to its styling and a terrain management system to its all-wheel-drive architecture.
