The 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe marks the first major redesign of this compact rear-drive sports coupe from the German automaker. There are two versions available: a 255-horsepower base 230i, and a 382-horsepower M240i xDrive all-wheel-drive model.
The two coupes start at respective MSRPs of $36,350 and $48,550, plus $995 delivery. An all-wheel-drive version of the 230i and rear-drive only M240i Coupes will follow later.
Sharper Styling
The 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe boasts a more muscular look that takes advantage of its larger dimensions. It now rides on a 2-inch longer wheelbase of 107.9 inches. Overall length is up 4.3 inches to 179.0, while the 72.4-inch width represents an increase of 2.6 inches.
The wider wheel arches reflect an increase in front and rear track, while the hood and fenders have a sharper, more crisply defined look than the model it replaces. Up front, the 2 Series retains a more traditional, slightly more horizontal take on BMW’s twin-kidney grill. That inlet is flanked by slim LED lighting.
At the rear, the 2 Series Coupe sports a ducktail spoiler integrated into the decklid, and distinctive angular LED taillamp units. Rounding out the look at the rear is a large diffuser flanked by round dual exhaust tips.
Powertrain Upgrades
The new BMW 2 Series benefits from improvements to its powertrains. The base 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine makes 255 horsepower at 5,000 rpm. That represents a gain of seven horses, while torque of 295 lb-ft at 1,500 rpm is increased by 37. BMW says the new engine, which mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission, is good for a 0-60 mph time of 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 130 or 155 mph depending on trim level.
The M240i xDrive model now makes 382 horsepower at 5,800 rpm from its twin-turbo I6 engine along with 369 lb-ft of torque from 1,800 rpm. This engine also uses an 8-speed automatic transmission. The improvements represent respective gains of 47 horsepower and 1 lb-ft of torque over the previous model. BMW says the M240i accelerates to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and has a top speed o 130 or 155 mph depending on specification.
New Cabin
In addition to its new exterior styling, the interior features a driver-oriented cockpit design. The setup groups the iDrive controller, gear selector, start/stop button, and a driving mode switch in the control panel on the center console. There’s a 5.1-inch digital instrument display in front of the driver and a standard 10.25-inch infotainment display, up from the previous 8.8-inch unit. Buyers can also opt for a larger 12.3-inch screen. BMW also offers a head-up display for the first time in the 2 Series Coupe.
Standard equipment includes sport seats and a leather-clad sport steering wheel with multi-function buttons. The upholstery is SensaTec leatherette, while Vernasca leather is an option. All models come with dual-zone automatic climate control. A driver/safety assist suite includes frontal collision warning with braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. All models also come with dynamic cruise control. Active blind-spot detection and active cruise control are also available.
The 2 Series Coupe features a 10-speaker premium audio system, two USB outlets, Bluetooth connectivity, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
The 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe goes on sale in November.
