Buyers of high-performance, ultra-luxury electric sedans are suddenly awash in options. How do you decide between the absurdly quick Tesla Model S Plaid and the Bill-Nye-endorsed Porsche Taycan? Or should you wait for the Lucid Air, with its reported 517-mile range? Or go for the new Audi e-tron GT, which shares the Porsche’s chassis but offers even more power in the base model?
Audi has a new offer to factor into your decision – three years of free charging.
Buyers who choose a new 2022 Audi e-tron GT or RS e-tron GT will get three years’ worth of free charging at Electrify America stations. There appears to be no cap on the offer. Buyers can simply charge for free for the first three years.
The e-tron GT uses two electric motors, one on each axle, to provide an emissions-free version of Audi’s famed quattro all-wheel-drive system. In base model form, it boasts 469 horsepower (surging to 522 for about 2.5 seconds with the launch control engaged). Its gorgeous, low-set cockpit features one of the biggest standard touchscreens we’ve seen.
The more potent RS e-tron GT claims 590 horsepower in normal driving, boosted to 637 with launch control.
The e-Tron GT Quattro starts at $99,900 plus destination fees. In RS form, it starts at $139,900. Both versions can now charge at Electrify America’s stations for free for three years. Electrify America says it “plans to have about 800 charging stations with approximately 3,500 chargers by the end of 2021.”
We should note that both companies are subsidiaries of Volkswagen.
The offer appears to set the e-tron GT apart for the time being. Tesla has periodically offered unlimited free charging on its own Supercharger network for Model S buyers, but that offer isn’t active at the moment.
