The Toyota GR Supra made its triumphant return one year ago, as an all-new entry co-developed with the latest BMW Z4 roadster. While the Z4 launched with both 4- and 6-cylinder engines (both turbocharged BMW units), the Supra offered just the six. For its second model year, however, the 2021 Supra adds an I4. It also bumps up the horsepower for the I6 and trots out a special limited edition.
The 2021 Toyota Supra now adds model designations: Supra 2.0 and Supra 3.0, each indicating the engine displacement. The new 2.0-liter 4-cylinder is the same turbocharged BMW unit found in the Z4. Its 255 horsepower is available from 5,000 to 6,500 rpm and, just like the 6-cylinder, this engine is paired exclusively with an 8-speed automatic. A manual is not available. Torque peaks at 295 lb-ft from 1,550 to 4,400 rpm. Toyota estimates a 0-to-60-mph time of 5.0 seconds for the Supra 2.0, while top speed is governed at 155 mph.
Other 2021 GR Supra 2.0 features
The smaller engine and some lighter chassis components—such as 18- rather than 19-inch wheels, smaller brake rotors, and single-piston calipers—result in reduced curb weight: 3,181 pounds, according to Toyota. That’s about 200 pounds less than the 3.0 model. The Supra 2.0 also skips the power seats, the 10-speaker stereo (getting by with just four speakers instead), the adaptive dampers, and the active rear differential.
For the Supra 3.0, Toyota has boosted its turbocharged inline-6 (also a BMW engine) from 355 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque to 382 ponies and 368 lb-ft. Those figures put it on par with the Z4 M40i. They also shave 0.1 of a second off that model’s factory-estimated 0-to-60-mph time, dropping it to 3.9 seconds. Top speed remains at 155 mph.
Chassis upgrades
Toyota has also tweaked the chassis of the 2021 Supra. Dampers have been re-tuned and new bump stops fitted. The programming for the electric power steering, the stability control system, the active rear differential, and the adaptive dampers has been revised. Toyota engineers also added braces from the strut towers to the radiator supports.

A new Safety and Technology option package is available for both the 2021 Supra 2.0 and the Supra 3.0. It includes navigation, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, a JBL premium audio system with 12 speakers, wireless Apple CarPlay, and connected concierge services. In other tech news, the 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that previously was on the upper trim levels is now standard across the board.
Supra 3.0 A91 Edition added
Also new for 2021 is the Supra 3.0 A91 Edition. Limited to 1,000 units, this special model comes with a black carbon fiber front splitter, carbon-fiber mirror caps, special graphics on the C-pillar, and matte black wheels. The black Alcantara interior features blue accents. Exterior colors are limited to Nocturnal (black) and Refraction (blue), the latter available on the A91 only.
What’s the price of the 2021 Toyota Supra?
Prices have yet to be announced, but the Supra 2.0 should undercut by several thousand dollars the current 2020 base model 6-cylinder Toyota Supra which is priced from $50,945 with destination charges. The 2021 Toyota Supra arrives in dealer showrooms in June.
