  • New 9G-TRONIC transmission replaces 7-speed
  • Slightly redesigned nose
  • Updated interior
  • DISTRONIC and active brake assist now available
  • Still no electric or diesel for U.S. market

Mercedes-Benz unveiled its updated Vito van in Stuttgart, Germany, a preview of the 2021 Metris van due to arrive later in the U.S. There’s a slightly different face and there are myriad updates throughout. But, the refreshed Metris is more of an evolution than a full overhaul. As before, the most significant updates are to the electrified and diesel versions, which are only available overseas.

What’s new on the 2021 Metris?

It looks like there will be valid reasons to consider the 2021 Metris. This is especially so if you’re considering a 2020 model. Whether you’re buying fleet cargo vans in bulk or building out a camper for the weekends, the new 9-speed transmission benefits from the two extra gears and the fuel economy they’ll theoretically offer. The gross vehicle weight rating gets a slight bump from 6,724 to 6,834 pounds, and there’s a lighter 6,393 lb GVWR option now available. Active Brake Assist pairs with DISTRONIC Plus active cruise control. This makes an already comprehensive active safety suite even more robust.

Inside, a subtle redesign includes Mercedes-Benz’ trademark circular vents on either side of the cabin and more robust seat fabric. The changes also feature high-gloss black trim for the center console, and new plastic floor covering. A 7-inch touchscreen display takes the place of the 5.8-inch screen in 2020 models. The digital interior mirror switches from conventional to display at the push of a button via camera imaging. It works with an improved rearview camera.

Nothing Electrifying for the U.S.

Mercedes-Benz’s e-Vito, which has been on sale in Germany since 2018 now has a range of 262 miles on the EU cycle along with other upgrades. European benefit from a wider choice of engines with the Vito offerings up to four different diesel options. Finally, air suspension debuts overseas for the first time in the Vito, allowing automatic individual wheel damping to suit the driving situation and the road conditions.

Pricing, availability

Pricing of the 2021 Metris comes later, but it’s a safe bet to assume figures close to 2020 models. Currently, 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris cargo vans start at $28,375, and top of the line passenger vans can easily reach into the $40k’s. Here in the U.S., the van soldiers on with the direct-injection 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4, producing 208 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
