.Volkswagen ID.4 owners are about to get some new features for their cars. Volkswagen has announced a software update that will make it easier to find charging stations, add a more intuitive trip computer, and introduce other enhancements.
The ID.4 can receive over-the-air updates. But VW is asking owners of 2021 ID.4 models to bring their cars into the dealership this time so dealers can also replace the 12-volt batteries. Owners of 2022 models, VW says, “will be notified soon regarding next steps for updates to their vehicles.”
The updates include a new “Auto Hold” function. It keeps the vehicle in place when stopped, even if the driver releases the brake pedal. It doesn’t disengage until the driver taps the accelerator pedal. Owners can turn it off if that’s too big a change to their driving habits.
Post-update, the infotainment system will let owners plan navigation routes based on the location of charging stations and filter stations by charging speed.
Volkswagen says this upgrade is “a prerequisite for future features,” indicating that more enhancements are planned.
The software-driven nature of electric cars means that automakers can add features on the go. Rival Polestar recently offered owners of its Polestar 2 sedan the opportunity to download more horsepower.
But it also introduces the possibility of subscription fees for some car features — which some legislators have sought to ban.
