To celebrate its 60th anniversary, the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition model has been announced and debuts at the Chicago Auto Show before going on sale in late summer. Toyota says the limited run of 1,200 vehicles is meant to honor the evolution of the Land Cruiser from a “bare-bones, mountain-climbing 4×4 to a world-renowned, full-capability premium-luxury utility vehicle.”

Based on the recently introduced 2-row version of Toyota’s top SUV, the 2020 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition opts for 5-passenger seating to maximize cargo capacity. Only two exterior colors will be offered, Midnight Black Metallic or Blizzard Pearl. Those colors are completed by a blacked-out grille and bronze BBS 18-inch alloy wheels. The exterior Land Cruiser exterior badging is also rendered in a vintage look to underscore the anniversary.

Eliminating the standard running boards and lower chrome body cladding and using darkened headlamps bezels, foglights with dark chrome surrounds and dark chrome on the exterior mirrors add to the understated, elegant look.

Plush interior meets off-road capability

Black leather upholstery with bronze stitching on the seats, leather covered steering wheel, door trim, center stack and console tie the exterior design cues to the interior. Among the luxury amenities are standard heated/ventilated seats, power moonroof, 4-zone climate control, a 9-inch center infotainment touchscreen, premium JBL sound system and navigation.  While it’s a luxury vehicle, the Land Cruiser Heritage Edition also comes with all-weather floor mats and a cargo liner making it ready for off-road use.

Beneath the hood, the mechanicals are unchanged. Power comes from a 381-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 making 401 lb-ft of torque. The engine is matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4-wheel drive. Towing is rated at 8,100 pounds. This setup also has a Torsen limited slip locking center differential and a 2-speed transfer case with a low range.

Class of 2020: The New and Redesigned Cars, Trucks and SUVs

The 2020 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition boasts a Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) which has hydraulically adjusted stabilizer bars which smooths on-road ride while allowing for greater suspension articulation off-road. Skid-plates and a Multi-Terrain Monitor along with Downhill Assist Control, Hill Start Assist, Crawl Control and Off-Road Turn Assist all add to the vehicle’s off-road prowess.

Expected to go on sale late this summer, the limited run of 2020 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition models will be priced closer to launch. The 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser starts at $84,765 plus $1,295 delivery.
