Subaru has announced tweaks to its lineup of performance models, the 2020 WRX, 2020 WRX STI, and 2020 BRZ sports coupe.
BRZ: New range-topping tS
The BRZ lineup sees the departure of the entry-level Premium model as well as the Series.Gray limited edition. The Limited trim level remains, and is joined by the new tS— which could be shorthand for “top spec,” although it in fact stands for “tuned by STI.” The tS is another limited edition, as just 300 will be built. It includes retuned springs and SACHS dampers, an underhood V-brace, stiffeners on the chassis and subframe, 215/40 Michelin Pilot Sport tires, and Brembo brake rotors squeezed by 4-piston calipers up front and 2-piston units at the rear.
All tS models get a low-profile rear spoiler and are finished in Ceramic White with red accents, a black antenna and mirrors, and matte-bronze 18-inch wheels. Fog lights are deleted. The black interior features Alcantara upholstery with red leather bolsters, and additional splashes of red are found on the seatbelts, dashboard, shifter, and elsewhere. The tS stickers for $31,495 (plus destination).
The BRZ Limited opens at $28,845, which is just $200 more than before. With the departure of the base model, however, getting into a BRZ now costs $3,100 more than it did last year.
WRX and WRX STI: Series.Gray goes away, minor changes elsewhere
For the WRX, the news in minimal. Last year’s Series.Gray limited edition has departed. The base, Premium, and Limited trim levels remain, each priced $300 more than last year. The WRX now starts at $27,495; the Premium model is $29,795; the Limited opens at $32,095 (all prices before $900 destination). The only change in equipment concerns the Performance Package that is available on the manual-transmission WRX Premium. It adds Brembo brake calipers to its previous content of Recaro seats, a power driver’s seat, and sunroof delete. It’s priced at $2,850, versus $2,050 previously.
Class of 2020: The New and Redesigned Cars, Trucks and SUVs
The WRX STI also bids farewell to the Series.Gray limited edition, but welcomes keyless entry and pushbutton start to the standard-equipment list. The standard 19-inch wheels are now finished in dark gray, and the engine-cooling ducts have been redesigned. Pricing of the WRX STI increases by $400 for the base model, now $36,995, and by $300 for the Limited, which for 2020 will set you back $41,695. Base-model buyers who opt for the Recaro front seats (which include power adjustment for the driver’s seat) now will have to pony up only $2,250, whereas last year it was $2,500.
The 2020 Subaru WRX, WRX STI, and BRZ will reach dealerships in the fall.
