  • New Land Rover Defender will be sold in U.S. and Canada
  • Shipments expected to begin in 2020 
  • Set to rival Jeep Wrangler

 

Land Rover said that it will be returning its iconic Defender to the U.S. market when the next generation goes on sale. The all-new Land Rover Defender will be launched in Europe next year and is slated to come to North America in 2020. The vehicle was last sold here from 1993-97. 

In making the announcement, Land Rover released photos of camouflaged prototypes of the new Defender, which will undergo testing in North America in both extreme heat of the desert and cold of the northern states and Canada. Land Rover said it will release more information and full specs when the vehicle is formally unveiled during 2019.

The 2020 Land Rover will boast a new exterior and interior design and the latest in driver assistant and connectivity. Early images show the vehicle retaining some classic cues like round headlamps and the boxy shape of the body. The Defender, has been caught in spy photos in both 2-  and  4-door variants, which lines up with its chief rival, the Jeep Wrangler.
