Hyundai has revealed a major redesign of its midsize Sonata sedan, embracing coupe-like styling in a slightly larger package. The sleek looking 2020 Hyundai Sonata takes its inspiration from the Le Fil Rouge concept car shown at the Geneva Motor Show a year ago. The production version of the car will be launched at the New York Auto Show in April.
In revealing the 2020 Hyundai Sonata, Sang Yup Lee, senior vice president and design chief said “Sonata celebrates innovative coupe-like silhouette. A short overhang, sloping roofline and low deck lid create a balanced feel, and Hyundai’s signature chrome accent now goes all the way into the hood, making it look even longer. It also has LED lighting built in. These cues bring the Sensuous Sportiness design to life.”
Larger footprint
The new Sonata’s wheelbase grows by nearly 1.5 inches, overall length is up 1.8 inches and the vehicle is about an inch wider and lower than the previous model. The nose of the Sonata features a wide, horizontal variant of the company’s cascading grille design. The opening is flanked by slim headlamp units outlined by daytime running lights.
Chrome brightwork also emphasizes the width of the vehicle by running beneath the grille and sweeping up into auxiliary inlets ahead of the front wheels. In profile, the new Sonata has a sleek greenhouse, a tapered rear end and crisply defined character lines. The rear has connected LED taillamps that sweep upward into the rear decklid spoiler.

The cabin sports a dash layout that has a winged shape inspired by stealth aircraft. The layered-look instrument panel appears to float and is dominated by a larger infotainment screen in the center. Additional controls are positioned below the thin vents and on the large center console. The steering wheel is also inspired by aviation with the look of an aircraft yoke.
