Matching the cadence of its chief competitors, Ford has refreshed its F-Series Super Duty pickup trucks for the 2020 model year. With the upcoming release of new GMC Sierra HD, Chevrolet Silverado HD and Ram 2500/3500 models, F-Series Super Duty will seek to maintain its leadership position in the segment with significant upgrades to available powertrains, transmissions, trailering, and technology, along with exterior and interior design updates.
New gas and diesel engines
Joining the holdover 385-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine, an all-new 7.3-liter V8 gas engine will be available for Super Duty. It features a push-rod architecture featuring a cast-iron block and forged steel crankshaft. Variable valve timing, port fuel injection and oil jet piston cooling will help the engine to adjust and cope with varying workloads. Ford hasn’t released output figures for the new engine.
The third-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 is tuned to produce more horsepower and torque than previous generation engines. A redesigned turbocharger will provide improved pumping efficiency and throttle response. The cylinder head, block, connecting rods and bearings have been enhanced for added strength to handle increased output and cylinder pressure. New low friction steel pistons will deliver higher firing pressure. The current diesel makes 450 horsepower and 935 lb-ft of torque. Presumably the new engine may hit the magic 1,000 lb-ft mark, though like the 7.3-liter gas engine, Ford is mum on output specs.
All three engines will now be available with a new 10-speed TorqShift automatic transmission with a wider gear ratio span and a live-drive power takeoff. The electronically controlled transmission operates with selectable drive modes: Normal; tow/haul; eco; slippery; and deep sand and snow.
Trailering and technology
New Pro Trailer Backup Assist will be available on the 2020 Super Duty. The system employs a knob to steer the trailer using visual assist from the Reverse Guidance system, which shows trailer angle and direction via the reverse camera. Without touching the steering wheel, drivers respond to steering suggestions using the Pro Trailer Backup Assist knob. The system can operate with all trailer styles, including gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers.
Class of 2020: The New and Redesigned Cars, Trucks and SUVs
Every new 2020 Super Duty will be equipped with FordPass Connect’s embedded 4G LTE modem with Wi-Fi access for up to 10 devices as standard equipment. Optional driver assist technology will include lane-keeping alert, Blind Spot Information System with trailer coverage, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Detection, wireless charging and USB-C power ports.
Design enhancements
All Super Duty models will receive a new front-end treatment that allows for optimized cooling under heavy loads, while dual-rear-wheel models get a unique version of the front end. LED headlights have a new look and improved performance. The tailgate, taillamps and rear bumper have been updated with a bolder look. Interior upgrades have been applied to Lariat and above models, with decorative appliques on doors and media bin. Limited models come in new colors and with genuine leather, ash wood and brushed aluminum trim with decorative stitching on the instrument panel topper, wrapped door armrests, seating and center console lid, and an embroidered Super Duty logo on the floor mats.
Pricing and availability
The new 2020 Super Duty will be built at both the Ford Kentucky Truck and Ohio Assembly plants and is scheduled to arrive at dealerships this fall. Pricing will be announced closer to launch. 2019 Super Duty pricing started at $33,150.
