An all-new 2020 BMW 7 Series will be launched this April featuring a bolder look and a wide variety of powertrains ranging from a turbocharged in-line six up through a plug-in hybrid.
The flagship sedan boasts a single frame around its traditional twin kidney grille, which has grown 40 percent in surface area over the previous model. The larger grille is offset by new, slender LED headlamps, bold character lines in the hood and bigger lower intakes.
Crisper character lines also define the profile of the new 7 Series and at the rear, the vehicle features a single strip connecting the 3D LED taillamps and wider rear exhaust tips added to the horizontal emphasis of the design theme. The 7 Series rides on a 126.4-inch wheelbase and boasts 44.4 inches of rear legroom, and 41.1 inches of front legroom. Overall length is 207.4 inches.
Five distinct models
The new 7 Series will be offered in five models starting with the rear-drive 740i, which is powered by a turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine producing 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. The 740i xDrive features the same engine with all-wheel drive. These models accelerate to 60 mph in 5.3 and 4.8 seconds respectively.
The 750i xDrive has a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine producing 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque as well as all-wheel drive. It accelerates to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. The M760i xDrive also has all-wheel drive and a V12 engine making 600 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, which propels the car to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds.
Rounding out the lineup is the 745e xDrive plug-in hybrid. Total system output of the 280-horsepower turbo inline-six and 113-horsepower electric motor is 389 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. Also going on sale in April, the plug-in hybrid has more power and a higher range when driving in all-electric mode than in the outgoing model. The 745e xDrive uses a 12.0 kWh lithium-ion battery, which is stored under the rear seats, freeing up more cargo space in the trunk. The PHEV’s all-electric driving range will be announced closer to the sedan’s on-sale date.
All models are equipped with 8-speed automatic transmissions.

7th generation iDrive
The interior of the BMW 7 Series features all-digital instrumentation and BMW’s latest generation of iDrive that features intelligent voice recognition and hand gesture features for various controls. The configurable screens include the ability to inset the navigation map in the main cluster display and there are up to 10 pages of custom screen displays.
Among the standard features on the all-new 2020 BMW 7 Series are dynamic damper control, air suspension, soft-close doors, panoramic sunroof, Harman-Kardon premium sound system, wireless device charging, Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
The 2020 BMW 7 Series goes on sale this April, with pricing to be announced closer to its launch. The current BMW 7 Series prices start at $83,650 for the 740i up through $156,700 for the M760i xDrive.
